Working with The Intercept to explain one of the NSA’s tools

This was an extremely top secret freelance project I worked on for the last couple of weeks! The Intercept, which was founded by the individuals who made a lot of Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA public, approached my frequent collaborator David Axe and I to create graphics explaining XKeyScore, one of the tools in the NSA’s arsenal. It was a privilege to work with them, and I think the graphics turned out pretty great!

A Night at the Minnesota Opera: Sketches from DOUBT

Sister Aloysius from Doubt

Last night I had the great privilege of joining the Black Hat Collective to sketch at the Minnesota Opera’s world premiere production of Doubt, based on the play of the same name. We had a fantastic time, and being able to experience this dramatic, heartbreaking, and often hilarious story in the medium of an opera was like nothing I’d ever experienced before.

I’m really looking forward to the next opportunity to draw at the MN Opera. They really know how to put on a show!

Happy Holidays!

I’ve updated a new commissioned illustration that I recently finished for my friends Daren and Eva (and their cats). Happy holidays, you guys!

"Daren and Eva," 2012.

I am also currently finalizing next year’s convention schedule as well as preparing Chapter 2 of O Human Star for its first printed edition. 2013’s going to be a very exciting year!

Back from Wyoming

This week I’m back from my 4 week long artist residency at the Brush Creek Ranch Arts Foundation in Wyoming, so it’s time to finish some work and prepare for some big events. New on my illustration page is a commission I finished for a friend of mine, viola player Kayleigh Miller.

"Kayleigh sur le fil," 2012

One more announcement: on September 15-16, I will be attending the Small Press Expo at table W31B. I will have O Human Star books and merchandise for sale, as well as a few copies of The Accidental Candidate. A list of my yearly appearances is available at my Events page.

Some highlights from the Franklin travel journals.

I attended Franklin College Switzerland for my undergrad degree and was very, very fortunate to travel to 10 countries from 2007 to 2011. For each year of school I kept a sketchbook/journal that I took with me on every academic travel. Most of the entries are rough sketches and watercolor paintings, many of them done on buses or at rest stops in 15 minutes or less, but there are still a few of the pages that I really like.
