Find me at Gaylaxicon 2025!
Twin Cities, my next event is as an invited guest at this year’s Gaylaxicon at the Crowne Plaze Suites by the Mall of America. Instead of vending in the Dealers Room as I’ve done in the past, I will be participating in panels, signings, and readings all weekend long. Here is my schedule:
FRIDAY October 3
4:00-5:00 PM – Signing at the Signing Table (I’ll have copies of Soft Physics for sale all weekend)
6:00-7:00 PM – Opening Ceremonies
SATURDAY October 4
10:00-11:00 AM – Second Wave Feminist SF: What Is it and Why Did it Matter? Some of us are too young to have been actively reading during the second wave of feminist science fiction (1960s and 70s), but this era produced Left Hand of Darkness (Le Guin), Woman on the Edge of Time (Piercy), The Female Man (Russ), some of which contain some gender exploration that is still fairly radical, even by today’s standards. So many old books are problematic, but are there some we should revisit? What about these Second Wave writers is still worth exploring or, perhaps, even celebrating? Eleanor Arnason, Blue Delliquanti. Haddayr Copley-Woods (moderator)
11:30 AM-12:30 PM – Signing at the Signing Table
1:00-2:00 PM – Transformative Comics and Graphic Novels. O Human Star, Nimona, Gender Queer: A Memoir, As the Crow Flies, and so many other great webcomics, comics, and graphic novels featuring trans, nonbinary, genderqueer folks are out there. Who were some of the first trans comic book artists? What’s the latest, hottest new title? Let’s discuss! Blue Delliquanti, Cameron Reed, Stephanie Burt
2:30-3:30 PM – Reading (I’m going to read BLEED ANY%)
SUNDAY October 5
10:30-11:30 AM – Superman is WOKE and Other Media Malarky. The new Superman movie came out in July to the familiar cry of “everything is so woke now!” from the right. What’s with the collective amnesia that comic books, superheroes, Star Trek, Star Wars, and many of our beloved ‘fanchises’ have ALWAYS had liberal values of empathy, diversity, equity, and inclusion? Let’s talk about some of the historical “liberal agenda” media representations and consider what we can do to support the continuation of it! Blue Delliquanti, Cameron Reed.
2:30-3:30 PM – Signing at the Signing Table
4:00-5:00 PM – Closing Ceremonies
